KOTA KINABALU: Following Sabah’s worst train crash, the authorities have started to build a slip road at the site for residents to use without crossing the railway lines.
State Infrastructure Assistant Minister Datuk Pang Nyuk Ming said the slip road would be between the state police headquarters at Kepayan – which is less than 1km from the accident site – and Putatan.
He said the road had been approved, with some parts already completed.
There are about 20 unmanned illegal crossings along the stretch used by thousands of people living and working in the surrounding commercial zones.
Pang said similar slip roads were also planned for other areas, as there were 70 illegal crossings in the state.
The slip roads are part of a RM334mil upgrade of the 134km Kota Kinabalu-Tenom railway line that started in November 2005.
The delay in completing the roads has drawn flak from the public, with residents along the tracks complaining they had no choice but to use the illegal crossings.
Pang said a study had been done to identify proper railway crossings with automated gates.
