A SMART card system at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building in Johor Baru could be the answer to ease the long-standing traffic congestion at the Causeway, a state assemblyman proposed yesterday.
The card would operate like a passport and record movements of those using the Causeway.
Datuk Tee Siew Kiong (BN-Pulai Sebatang) said the complex had not succeeded in reducing traffic jams at the Causeway so far.
"A smart card should be introduced for people who travel frequently between Malaysia and Singapore via the Causeway. For regular commuters, the card could be used instead of a passport. This will also ease the workload of Immigration officers," Tee said when debating the motion of thanks for the Sultan of Johor's royal address.
Tee said many countries had introduced the smart card system for regular travellers.
He added that vehicles at the CIQ complex were checked one by one, making clearance a slow process.
"If the occupants of a car need to go through further clearance, their lane will be closed to allow officers to attend to them.
"When this happens, the cars behind them are forced to move to another lane, and this causes congestion.
"All vehicles should be checked collectively, like in Singapore," Tee said.
He recalled being caught in a traffic jam at the CIQ complex two weeks ago.
