SS16 folk breathe easier with less congestion

RESIDENTS in SS16, Subang Jaya, have been able to breathe easier since a new traffic scheme by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) has helped ease congestion in the area.

The scheme, introduced on Jan 15, was aimed at reducing congestion along Jalan SS 16/1 and preventing vehicles from making U-turns on Jalan SS16/2.

The new system saw Jalan SS 16/1 being turned into a one-way road, while Jalan Jengka and Jalan SS 16/2 were turned into two-way roads to facilitate traffic flow.

While most of the access to shopping centres and commercial buildings in SS16 remained the same, those who want to head to the Subang Jaya KTM Komuter Station now have to take a longer route by making a loop at the end of Jalan Kemajuan at the Mesiniaga building.

Although the scheme has been in place for a few weeks, there remain some motorists who disregard the system, whether out of sheer ignorance or mere convenience.

Some of these motorists risk driving against the traffic flow and illegally making a quick U-turn at the end of Jalan SS16/2 just to save the short distance to the Subang Jaya KTM Komuter Station.

Saujana Residency joint management body chairman Marcus Tan said residents now found it easier to enter and exit the condominium block located along Jalan SS 16/1.

“Although we have to take a longer route to access our condo, it is a small compromise as there has been a big improvement in terms of the congestion,” he said.

“Traffic along Jalan SS 16/1 and Jalan SS 16/2 is generally smooth, although there is usually a bottleneck at Jalan Kemajuan, with one of the three lanes taken up by illegally parked or waiting vehicles,” he said.

Tan noted that the problem of illegal parking in SS16 was still rampant, especially during evenings, weekends and public holidays.

“The MPSJ install more signage, especially to lead motorists to the Subang Jaya KTM Komuter Station, and enforce stricter measures to deter illegal parking such as by clamping the offenders’ vehicles,” he added.

MPSJ councillor and Zone 1 JKP (residents committee) chairman Dr Loi Kheng Min acknowledged that there was a need for more prominent signage to educate motorists who were unaware of the new traffic scheme.

“Although the council carries out regular enforcement measures in SS16, some motorists choose to remain stubborn and illegally park their cars by the roadside,” he said.

“The management of the shopping centres in the area also need to play a role in reminding their suppliers and customers to carry out loading/unloading activities and park at the designated areas,” he said.

Subang Parade centre manager Chay Siew Mun said the management had done the necessary by informing its tenants and customers via circulars and notices placed at parking booths respectively.

“However, some choose to be uncooperative and rude despite being politely informed about not parking illegally by the security guards who patrol the perimeter of our premises,” he said.

Chay added that Subang Parade’s management would continue liaising with the authorities to facilitate the traffic scheme.
