Toll on part of NPE abolished

Postby admin » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:24 pm

PETALING JAYA: Toll collection at the Kuala Lumpur-bound toll plaza at PJS2 on the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) will be abolished as of 12:01am Saturday.

The Cabinet decided to do away with the RM1.60 toll last week, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed on Friday.

“The decision by the Cabinet was a consequence of the Works Ministry’s memorandum to abolish the toll,” he said during the announcement ceremony of the abolition.

He said removing the toll was also meant to soften the effects of economic uncertainties for the residents of PJS 1 and 2, who had to pay RM1.60 toll every time they drove towards Kuala Lumpur since April 2004.

Mohd Zin did not specify the amount of compensation to be paid to concessionaire NPE Sdn Bhd. Officials of the consessionaire could not be reached.

A small but noisy crowd of Umno, PAS and PKR supporters turned up to support the abolition of the toll, which was considered a Valentine’s Day gift not only to road users heading to Kuala Lumpur but also for the 30,000 residents of nearby Taman Medan and Kampung Dato’ Haron.

Toll scrapping ceremony turns ugly

Postby admin » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:25 pm

Toll scrapping ceremony turns ugly as rival parties try to claim credit. The ceremony today to scrap toll collection for the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) traffic heading towards Kuala Lumpur at the Petaling Jaya Selatan (PJS) toll near Kampung Medan turned into ugly when rival political groups turned up to claim credit for the abolishment.

Minutes before Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed arrived to officiate the ceremony, about 100 Umno supporters turned up with banners of thanks and support but were upstaged by a similarly sized group from Pas and PKR carrying placards of their own, leading to a slanging match of screams and whistles.

Umno PJS youth chief Ridzuan Mahidin insisted that the abolishment was due to the work of Umno PJS but Pas representative Rahman Ahmad argued that it was his party that had been fighting to scrap the toll plaza even before it was erected.

Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong, who was present, brushed off the standoff, saying the show of emotions proved that the will of the people had been adhered to and that the presence of both groups were “healthy competition.”

The situation heated up when Mohd Zin spoke. Although he repeatedly said the issue was about the welfare of the people and shouldn’t be politicised, he also mentioned that it was due to the “work of the BN Government.”

His quip that the abolishment was ‘BN’s sign of love to the people on Valentine’s day’ triggered cheers and applause from supporters but whistles and catcalls from the Pakatan crowd.

Events took a bizarre twist when a Pas supporter grabbed balloons placed at the ceremony with one hand and a Pas flag in the other while sprinting across the highway .

Mohd Zin, sensing that things were getting unruly, decided to cancel his scheduled press conference, to the surprise of VIP guests from the Malaysian Highway Authority, NPE and IJM and the media.
