Toll-free LDP on National Day

THE Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) concessionaire will not charge motorists toll fees on Aug 31 in conjunction with Merdeka Day.

Litrak group chief executive officer Sazally Saidi said the move would be effective from midnight and was applicable to all vehicles using the highway.

Motorists on the Sprint Highway, which Litrak is also the concessionaire, would enjoy a 20sen discount.

“We believe about 500,000 road users will enjoy the discount. We will absorb the RM800,000 in costs,” he said during the Litrak Hari Raya open house held at Litrak’s operations centre in PJS 9, Bandar Sunway.

The four affected toll plazas are Penchala, Petaling Jaya, Puchong Barat, and Puchong Selatan.

The Merdeka toll-free day has been practiced since 2010.

When asked about the conversion to electronic toll plazas for Litrak, he said it would take several years to be implemented.

The transition, he said, had to be done in stages after reviewing feedback from the Batu Tiga-Sungai Rasau toll plazas along the Federal Highway, which would be implementing the system next month.

Sazally also said the migration was expected to be done in three years but they would have to take the new MRT and LRT extension lines into consideration before making the changes.

“We believe there will be a change in the traffic pattern, so we will have to re-consider the plans then,” he added.

He said the electronic tolls could ease congestions at the highly concentrated LDP, and added that the problem was largely due to the congestion on the Federal Highway.

Justifying the congestion, Sazally said eight highways were linked to the LDP.

“We have to address the traffic issue at the Federal Highway that causes a backlog into LDP.

“We are currently working with the highway authorities to find a solution,” he added.
