ROAD users can expect major traffic flow changes along the Pandan Indah-Taman Shamelin Perkasa bridge soon as the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) upgrading project enters its final stage.
The upgrading project involves a 2.8km stretch from Pandan Indah to Kampung Pandan Dalam.
Chempaka assemblyman Iskandar Abdul Samad said to avoid long queues all the way to the MRR2, the Public Works Department (JKR) would be removing the traffic lights on the bridge to create free traffic flow.
Road users will no longer be able to turn right from any direction to go onto the bridge,” Iskandar said during a briefing session by JKR recently.
Iskandar is requesting JKR to delay the closing of the traffic lights that was originally planned for Jan 22.
“We have asked JKR to delay this move until after the Chinese New Year holidays so as not to inconvenience motorists,” he said.
Ampang councillor Meor Rithuan Mohamed Said also suggested that JKR put up more signages before the move was implemented.
“We want people to be well-informed before the changes are made so that there will be less confusion,” he said.
The other suggestions made during the briefing include looking into the problem of road users making an illegal U-turn at the traffic lights in Pandan Jaya.
“Those coming from Hulu Kelang have to travel an extra two or three kilometres just to get to Tesco on the opposite side of the road.
“Previously, they were able to make a U-turn under the MRR2 flyover in Pandan Jaya but this has since been closed because of the project,” said Iskandar, adding that JKR has been requested to look into reopening the U-turn.
There is traffic congestion at the traffic lights since road users began making the U-turn there.
Another problematic area is at the Kampung Pandan Luar exit where vehicles tend to make a dangerous illegal turn onto the road that leads to Kampung Pandan Dalam.
“I hope JKR can look into this as well and provide a proper junction for road users since many are already making the illegal turning,” he said.
After the project is completed there will be three lanes in both directions along the MRR2 stretch, removing the bottleneck for traffic exiting or entering the MRR2.
The free flow traffic concept has already been implemented under the MRR2 where the Pandan Jaya interchange is located.
Road users from Jalan Cempaka can use a dedicated ramp to merge onto Cheras-bound MRR2 as usual or head across to Pandan Jaya without waiting at the traffic lights while those from Pandan Jaya, however, can only turn left to go onto the Hulu Kelang-bound MRR2.
The U-turn in Kampung Pandan Dalam after Tesco has also been upgraded to two lanes while a new elevated lane has been constructed after the second Pandan Indah junction.
