Transporting goods to cost 40% more

GEORGE TOWN: Goods transported from here to the KL International Airport (KLIA) and Johor in a 10-tonne trailer will cost RM190 and RM640 more with immediate effect.

The Penang Freight Forwarders Association (PFFA) announced it is increasing its tariff rates between 20% and 40% following the recent fuel hike.

Its president Joachim Loo said the rates from here to KLIA would be increased from RM950 to RM1,140 and from RM1,600 to RM2,240 to Johor.

He said there would be a 20% hike in the rates for consignments sent from the northern region to the central region (Perlis to Klang Valley).

“The hike is 40% for the second area covering the northern region to the southern region (Penang to Singapore and from Bukit Kayu Hitam to Bangkok),” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

Loo said the decision to increase the rates was made at the association’s emergency meeting.

The new rates also vary with the distance and tonnage of the consignments.

PFFA vice-president Krishnan Chelliah said although the association’s 118 members receive subsidised diesel, the quantum allowed by the Government was not even enough to cover 10% of their members’ total usage.

“The Government is only subsidising us between 1,000 and 2,900 litres of diesel depending on the tonnage,” he said.
