SHOPPERS driving to the Bercham market will soon have more room for parking, thanks to the efforts of the Ipoh City Council.
The market, located next to Jalan Bercham and surrounded by houses, is often congested due to lack of parking spaces.
Councillor Lai Kong Phooi said he had managed to get the council to allocate RM40,000 to upgrade a road behind the market.
Spanning 152.4m-long, the Persiaran Bercham Timur 1 road had been repaired and resurfaced while work was ongoing to relocate a street light to convert it into a parking lot, he said.
The drainage along the road had also been repaired, he added.
“The road was not tarred and uneven prior to the upgrading exercise and could accommodate up to 84 cars at a time.
“However, we were able to increase the number of parking bays to 126 after resurfacing the road.
“To further maximise the use of space and to ease traffic congestion, lines will be drawn along the road to bring the number of parking bays to 150,” Lai told reporters after visiting the site last Friday.
Lai said he was seeking another RM10,000 allocation from the council to draw parking lines there.
“I will bring up the need for this allocation at the council’s next traffic committee meeting,” he said, adding that the allocation would also be used to redraw the parking lines along Lorong Bercham 11 nearby.
Lai said many visitors took advantage of the worn out lines at Lorong Bercham 11 to park recklessly, thus, increasing the traffic congestion at the market each day.
