An uprooted tree measuring some 13m caused a massive traffic jam stretching from Batu Ferringhi to Tanjung Bungah in Penang.
The tree toppled under the force of strong winds.
It landed on an overhead electric cable about 50m from the Mar Vista apartment blocks.
Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Department acting chief Mohd Nor Ismail said they received a distress call at 11.14am yesterday and five firemen in an engine rushed to the scene.
“We took about an hour to saw the trunk and clear the debris with the help of the Public Works Department contractors.
“We were very careful when sawing off the branches to avoid cutting the cable,” he said when contacted.
Vehicles were stuck in the jam for over an hour. Many motorists turned their vehicle engines off while the tree was being removed.
Several traffic police personnel were also seen directing traffic along the road.
