The authorities have been urged to build a drainage system connecting Kampung Jawi and Kampung Titi Hitam in Nibong Tebal, Seberang Prai, to the nearby Sungai Jawi.

Tan Cheng Liang, who is Implementation and Coordination Unit (ICU) Jawi officer of the Prime Minister’s Department, said the current drainage system was causing flash floods in the area whenever there was a downpour.

Tan asked the Drainage and Irrigation Department and the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) to look into the problem as residents in the area were suffering financial losses.

More than 50 families living in both areas were badly affected by a flash flood after a downpour on March 25.

Tan, who visited the affected families, said some of the victims were poor and would face financial difficulties resulting from the losses.

She said their furniture and electrical appliances were damaged in the incident, and losses were estimated at between RM1,000 and RM100,000.

She added that the DID should deepen the Sungai Jawi and drains in the area to avert a recurrence of the problem.
