KUALA LUMPUR: The new Bailey bridge has been successfully built to provide an alternative route for residents cut off by the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide.

With the installation of the bridge, which was completed at 4am yesterday, the tactical bridge constructed by the army earlier was dismantled.

The landslide on Dec 6 buried Jalan Bukit Antarabangsa under tonnes of soil, cutting off some 2,000 residents living in several housing estates including Taman Bukit Utama and Taman Bukit Jaya.

Brig-Jen Datuk Azman Rosli of the Eleventh Commando Brigade said the Bailey bridge would serve the same purpose as the tactical bridge. He said the tactical bridge would be taken back to the Engineering Regiment in Kluang, Johor, today.

The tactical bridge, which was placed over a monsoon drain, had connected a temporary road from the cut-off section of Bukit Antarabangsa with the car park of the Riverdale Park apartments.

The Bailey bridge is located near the tactical bridge but outside the apartment compound. Brig-Jen Azman said that together with the Public Works Department, the army was expanding the Bailey bridge to two lanes to allow two-way traffic.
