PETALING JAYA: The Road Safety Department and KTMB will be announcing “crucial initiatives” in the run-up to the balik kampung (homecoming) rush for the coming Chinese New Year.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said these initiatives would be part of the Government’s measures to help reduce road fatalities and accidents during the rush home.

“We are going to have crucial initiatives for Malaysians rushing home to celebrate Chinese New Year. The department -- together with the Malaysia Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) -- will be launching its initiatives soon.

“In addition, I have also directed KTMB to make changes in the quality and frequency of its rail services to facilitate homebound traffic,” he told reporters after launching the 20th anniversary celebration of CNI Holdings here on Thursday.

Ong said KTMB had also been monitoring the public response towards its rail services since the Hari Raya festive period last year, particularly in terms of frequency and number of tickets available during the balik kampung rush.

Earlier, Ong lauded CNI’s decision to give away free coffee to road users during the festive period.

“From my experience when driving ..., such a gesture makes a lot of difference to motorists,” he said.
