PETALING JAYA: The speed limit on Federal and state roads will be lowered by 10kph from Sunday to Sept 27 under the latest Integrated Road Safety Campaign to reduce accidents.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, who disclosed this, said Ops Sikap XX would also be held during the same period with several new intervention measures to be included under the campaign.

“The new measures by the ministry for this year’s festive periods include encouraging motorists to use public transport and travel during the day,” he said at the launching of the campaign here yesterday.

Presently, the maximum speed limit on Federal and state roads is 90kph and 80kph respectively.

Warning signs will also be put up at 300 accident-prone locations to ensure motorists would be more careful when driving through these areas.

Ong said inspections would also be conducted on express buses at depots and terminals and drivers would have to undergo urine tests.

“The number of vehicles will increase two-fold to 1.3 or 1.4 million daily compared to the 700,000 to 800,000 on normal days,” he said.

The minister said the increase in the number of vehicles would certainly increase the risk of accidents and deaths.

“However, we have managed to reduce the number of deaths caused by road accidents from 24 per day during Ops Sikap I to 15 a during festive periods,” he said.
