PETALING JAYA: A road sweeper's hopes of earning overtime money by working on a public holiday turned out to be a fatal decision when he was run over by a van along the Federal Highway.

Sugiyanto, 40, an Indonesian, was cleaning the roadside wearing a reflective safety vest along the flyover above Jalan 225 here when a speeding van rammed into him.

It was believed the driver of the blue Nissan Vanette was speeding on the emergency lane of the KL-bound side of the highway.

The vehicle rammed into the victim and dragged his body for 30m before it came to a halt in the 1.30pm incident yesterday.

The victim, who had been working in Malaysia for 18 months, suffered injuries to the chest, face and head.

“He was hoping to earn some extra money to send to his family back home by working on the Wesak Day public holiday,” said Sugiyanto's supervisor, who declined to be named.

Police have arrested the driver in his 30s.
