KUALA LUMPUR: Deafening noise from illegally modified motorcycles’ exhaust pipes remains a huge problem, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas.

From January last year to May this year, 3,765 motorcycles were stopped for noise inspection and 197 motorcyclists were sum-moned for violating the stipu- lated noise limits, he said, adding that the overall compliance was 94.8%.

“For this reason, the Department of Environment carried out joint enforcement campaigns with traffic police to control excessive noise from motorcycles,” he said during a signing ceremony for joint collaboration between 01dB-Metravib from France and Sound and Vibrant Technology from Malaysia yesterday.

Douglas said noise pollution would continue to be a challenge as the country progressed – from construction to industrial activities and transportation.
