Traffickers nabbed after 40km car chase
Officers in a police patrol car spotted a man and four women inside the car at 3.45pm.
A high-speed chase then ensued from Batu Feringgi when the driver sped away after noticing the police vehicle.
The police officers radioed for help from their colleagues.
During the 40km chase, the policemen fired several shots, one of which hit the car's rear tyre.
The punctured tyre caused the driver to lose control of the car, crashing it into a road divider near the Penang Bridge toll plaza.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said a 26-year-old man and four women, aged between 20 and 50, were detained.
The officers also recovered some syabu and 10 MyKads in the car.
“The car's registration number and road tax were fakes, leading us to believe that it could have been stolen.
“We have classified the case as drug trafficking under Section 39b of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” ACP Gan added.
