KUALA LUMPUR: Only six per cent out of the 21 million traffic summonses accumulated over the past decade had been settled, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

He said in a statement yesterday that as at the end of last month, accumulated traffic summonses stood at 20,946,361, and only 1,265,453 had been settled.

Of the 3,131,294 summonses issued this year, only 824,220 (26.3 per cent) were settled.

The collection of summonses is one of the initiatives under the Urban Public Transport National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) to ensure the prompt settlement of outstanding summonses by traffic offenders.

"The government has reduced the burden on traffic offenders by allowing them to settle their accumulated summonses one at a time," said Kong, adding that the grace period was until Feb 28 next year.

"With the blacklist temporarily lifted, the offenders can gradually pay their summonses, without chalking up demerit points."
