When traffic jam is man-made

Postby admin » Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:33 am

CARS are caught in an unnecessary jam at the intersection between Lebuh Bukit Jambul and Tingkat Bukit Jambul junction in Penang. This happens every morning at 8am and every evening at 5.50pm.

The reason is simple: Lebuh Bukit Jambul leading to Tingkat Bukit Jambul has two lanes — one on the left leading to Jambul Apartment which houses only 100 occupants and a dead end as well as a right one that connects everyone (in the thousands) to Bayan Lepas and George Town.

Road users have no choice but to use the left lane to make a right turn because the only way to go anywhere is to turn right.

I have no idea why a left lane is exclusively allocated to the occupants in Jambul Apartment. I do not know why orange coloured road cones are placed in between the lanes. I also have no idea why there is an illegal nasi lemak stall right at the junction.

Residents from Air Itam, Balik Pulau and Sungai Ara have to squeeze into one pathetic right lane just to make a right turn.

This problem boils down to one solution: The arrow on the left lane should allow drivers to make a left and right turn. This requires the drawing of an additional arrow on the road.

Such junctions are not uncommon in Penang. I have come across many of such junctions (that is between Lebuh Delima and Jalan Bukit Gambir, between Lebuhraya Gelugor and Batu Lanchang highway etc). You can easily check out the locations at Google map for the exact places.

I do not know which authority is in charge of ‘correcting’ the road lines but I definitely hope that The Star could help to highlight or forward this matter (to the appropriate body), so that the man-made traffic congestion can be resolved.
