Works Minister not impressed with delay at toll plaza

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists at the Jalan Duta toll plaza, one of the city’s major entry points, have to endure a long wait to pay their toll fare every morning.

Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor, who did a check at 8.45am yesterday, said it took him 14 minutes to clear a 100m-long queue at the toll plaza. Not surprisingly, he was not pleased.

“If the queue had been worse and stretched for 1km, motorists would have had to spend up to an hour waiting. A lecturer can earn RM200 in that hour,” he told reporters.

Shaziman said a road user paying cash would have to queue for 14 to 15 minutes to clear the toll plaza during rush hour in the morning or evening.

“If you multiply that with about 5,000 cars going through the toll plaza during those hours, imagine how much time is wasted,” he said.

In contrast, the average time needed to perform the act of paying toll was a mere 10 seconds.

Shaziman encouraged motorists to switch from cash to Touch ’n Go and Smart Tag for toll payments.

He said local car manufacturers should include Smart Tags as an accessory.

On suggestions for toll to be waived when highways were badly congested, Shaziman said that was not possible as users had to pay despite the jam because they have used the facility.

“You still used the facility. Our duty is to improve the situation,” he said.

Shaziman said an analysis of the multi-lane free-flow system should be ready by this year, and the ministry would submit a working paper to the Cabinet based on the findings.

The system is extensively used in Australia, the United States, Chile and Canada. Some of the advantages include improved traffic flow, reduction in travel time, savings on fuel and cutting down vehicle wear and tear.
